Arts + Calligraphy Demonstration
Wednesday 12 March 10.30-12.30
And now for something completely different. Following on from the fascinating lecture on the tomb robbers of Ancient Egypt our next ARTS+ offering is a demonstration of the art of Calligraphy.
You may know Caroline Keevil as the lady who serves you coffee before our lectures but she has spent the last 30 years working as a calligrapher and is a Fellow of the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society.
In this workshop Caroline and her colleague, Joanna Green, will:
Demonstrate the use of the calligrapher’s broad-edged pen
Show their use in a range of scripts from Uncials and Roman Capitals through Gothic letters and 16th Century Italics to scripts of the 20th and 21st Century
Demonstrate the beauty of Copperplate script
Talk about some of their own work and share a facsimile copy of the St John’s Gospel, the first handwritten and illuminated Bible in 500 years. Full sized copies of the complete seven volumes can now be seen by appointment at Salisbury Cathedral
Last, but not least, you can also try out your own skills as a budding calligrapher.
Our Speakers: Caroline Keevil and Joanna Green
Caroline joined NADFAS in the 1980’s, has served on numerous Arts Society Committees and is now enjoying her retirement serving coffee to our members. She is a Fellow of the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society(CLAS) and a lay member of the Society of Scribes & Illuminators and of the Letter Exchange.
Working from her studio in Rowde, Caroline remains active as a Lettering Artist, where she designs and makes paintings to commission and for exhibition. She also teaches and runs a weekly calligraphy and lettering course in Rowde.
Joanna is a member of the Rowde group which meets every Monday afternoon in Caroline’s studio. Like many calligraphers, Joanna started learning the basics of uncial and foundation scripts and now specialises in producing works in beautiful Copperplate script. Joanna works with dyslexic children at Appleford School and is a governor at Dauntsey’s school.
